Lead with a clear site name and a short summary of who you are and what you offer, then list the canonical pages an assistant should cite first—homepage, core services or products, about, and contact. Prefer stable, indexable URLs over campaign or thank-you pages, and add a brief note after each link so the purpose of that page is obvious. Think of it as a curated map for AI search and citations, not a dump of every URL on the site.

Group links by how someone would ask about your business—Services, Products, Resources, Blog, Company, Contact—rather than mirroring your CMS folder tree. Keep each section small and high-signal so assistants can pick the right page without scanning a long flat list. Put the pages you most want cited near the top of each section, and skip thin or redundant destinations that dilute the signal.

A sitemap aims for crawl coverage: many URLs, often including archives and secondary pages. An llms.txt is editorial—it highlights the handful of pages that best represent your brand and answers for AI assistants. Keep both: the sitemap helps discovery at scale, while llms.txt steers citations toward accurate, up-to-date primary content. Links in llms.txt should still match real, canonical URLs you would also be comfortable listing in the sitemap.

Review it whenever your positioning, primary offerings, or key URLs change—new service lines, renamed pages, or a redesigned information architecture. Stale links and outdated summaries cause assistants to cite the wrong page or describe your site incorrectly. A light quarterly check is enough for most sites; high-change sites should update as soon as the homepage narrative or main CTAs shift.

Write the summary in plain language that matches what appears on your live site, and only link pages that currently return useful content. Prefer one canonical URL per topic, with short descriptions that state what the page answers so assistants can cite confidently. Avoid hype, outdated claims, or soft 404s—accuracy builds trust when AI search tools use your file as a source of truth.
